Efficient and Portable -- A Great Grill for Travel

My first "Go-Anywhere Weber Grill," purchased in 1984, sold me on design and efficiency. After cooking my dinner, I'd shut the side and top air vents thus suffocating the fire. I found I could get two, three, and sometimes four meals from a single load of charcoal (depending on cooking times). And, on picnics, the fire would be out and the grill "touchable" after about 15 minutes. The grill is large enough to handle most meals for say 6 to 8 persons and even small (4-6 lb) chickens, but if you're cooking turkey, this isn't the grill for you. I'm now on my second "G-A" grill, as the first bounced around the world with me in Korea, Yemen, China, and the U.S. until the movers crushed it in 1993. Ended up contacting Weber directly when I couldn't find a replacement locally, and number 2 is in good shape after 8 years of rigorous use.

Update: 11/4/13: Now in use 20 years and still works well with few signs of wear --though I treat it with respect and affection, having travelled with me to Ethiopia, Mongolia, China, and the Philippines.

Excellent portable or secondary grill

This is a well-designed small scale charcoal grill. I generally use it when I only want to cook for one or two people or when portability matters.

I've had my Go-Anywhere charcoal grill for about three years, and it has held up extremely well. The durable exterior coating is very resistent to the elements (and it's small enough that you could easily let it cool down and chuck it into a closet if you want to keep it indoors). The only thing that has really shown any significant wear is the grill grate, but these are easily replacable (and, in the long run, all grates give out eventually).

The grill has four air vents (two top mounted exhaust vents, and two vents mounted along the bottom sides). Opening all four vents allows enough oxygen flow for medium temperature cooking. Closing all four vents will suffocate a fire pretty quickly. Cooking with the lid off and the bottom vents open will net you a hot fire that will be great for searing.

Additionally, the lid can be "rockered" back onto the body of the grill. This means that you don't have to look around for someplace to put a potentially very hot piece of metal *and* you can use it as a windshield if you want.

If you like charcoal cooking and you either want a small grill or you need a portable grill, I would highly recommend this product.

very nice grill

Hi there, I've just recently purchased this grill and have used it 2 times already. I can honestly say that this grill has exceeded my expectations! It is well built, and folds up very compactly for storage. It (like all Weber products) cooks very evenly, and refuses to flare up. The air dampers are easy to operate, and the porcelin coating will ensure many years of use. You will also be suprised at how much food you can cook on it. (I have 5 kids, and the grill is still hot when we've eaten our full) We enjoy it, and I'm sure you will too!

Awesome and then some! Plus an update...

I ordered this heavy (33 pounds) little jewel from Amazon a week ago, got it much earlier than expected and tried it out the day I got it. I now have 4 grills: An "oil barrel" type that is perfect for when the family tribe shows up, 2 Weber kettle types in different sizes for weekend entertaining and now the Lodge.

I've had several cast aluminum discount store hibachi's over the years and after the wooden handles fall off, the legs become impossible to tighten and then the "adjustable" supports for the grill crack. I don't see that happening with this hibachi.

Let the grill pre-heat, spray it with PAM and then enjoy the meal. The heat is even, cooking times may be a bit faster than you think, but the dish will be excellent.

HOWEVER! If one is cooking on a wooden deck, as I do, invest in some bricks or concrete pavers to go under the feet. Like all cast iron, this sucker retains heat and you don't want to burn your house down while entertaining guests.

Look for the book "The Honerable Hibachi" by Kathryn Popper. An excellent guide/recipe book.

I wonder if this would be safe to use in a large fireplace in winter months. Any ideas?

I'm thinking about getting another Lodge and then finding a home for the smaller Weber.

Get one and then enjoy your hibachi.

Update Feb 26, 2006:

I've now had the Lodge Hibachi for 4 months and typically use it several times a week. Clean-up is even easier than it was when new. Remember to put a little olive oil or PAM on the grids first and the seasoning improves. In cold, rainy weather, the hibachi fits and cooks nicely in my fireplace (thanks, Ukiechris!), but I crack a window when I do that.

Although quite heavy, it's a great picnic grill and will easily cook chicken, steaks or burgers for 4 people. My Webers must think I don't love them anymore. I do, but the Lodge is perfect for 1-4 people and chicken cooked on the hibachi has a flavor my kettle or barrel grills just can't match.

Besides cooking for that tribal gathering, I'll let you know if I find something the Lodge can't do.

Wonderful Grill for Steaks and Burgers

A great little grill! Though I grew up with weber, kettle type grills, and even tried a trash-picked gas grill, I have never used a grill that cooks so consistently well.

I use mine with hardwood charcoal -- this gets the temperature hot, fast. As soon as the charcoal is lit up I spread the coals outward, drop the grill on top (on the high side of the legs), and let it warm up for a couple minutes. Once the cast iron is warmed up the heat radiates evenly across the cooking surface. To check the temp, I hold my hand 4 inches over the top of the grill -- if I can hold it there for more than a couple seconds, it is not hot enough. Without adding charcoal, I usually have just enough time to do two batches on the grill.

For steak, I leave the meat on for four minutes each side. When I pull it off, it has a nice crispy crust, and a perfect pink inside. When I cook burgers, I leave them on five minutes each side. And, chicken, I'll take a boneless, skinless chicken breast and pound it flat with a fry pan before tossing it onto the grill (this prevents the common problem of dry on the thin end and too pink on the thick end). Four minutes each side, and when the milky juice flows out when pricked with a fork, you know that it is perfect and juicy. I cook fish in a similar fashion. A little flavor tip: Some coarse kosher salt and fresh ground black pepper added to your meat before cooking is usually all you need to have excellent results.

Now, for roasting or smoking, this is not the product for you. Since there is not a lid it would be impossible to cook a whole chicken, for instance. Buy a weber for that. But a weber will never acheive the kind of perfect steaks and burgers that you get from one of these.

We have had our grill for three years now. It has lived outide our home the entire time in all kinds of weather - rain, snow, ice, or sun. And I was grilling in all conditions. I have performed absolutely no maintenance -- never oiled it, never cleaned the ashes. It seams perfectly happy in this state of useful neglect.

If you want a great charcoal grill, this is what you want.

Rescued from the Trash Pile!

One of my friends received this as a gift to use for tailgating parties. After a few uses, he decided it took to long to cool off, was to hard to clean and had put it back in the box with the intention of setting it out with the trash! Fortunately before he did, he saw me looking at it on this website and asked if I planned on buying it. I said yes and he said don't because he had one that he was going to throw away. If I didn't mind it being used and a little rusty, I could have his. I took it. It was rusted but I scrubbed it, oiled all the parts, and seasoned it in the oven (it was still cold outside so I couldn't fire it up)!

This little grill came in so handy when we bought another house in the spring and removed the stove to make way for the new one. I cooked on it everyday. What my friend found as a disadvantage, I found as an advantage, it stays hot for a long time!

I grilled everything, half smokes, kabobs, burgers, chicken, veggies, fish, etc. . . and nothing stuck! I also grilled ribs on it. I sliced them into individual ribs, placed them on the grill, and covered them with foil (crimped the foil around the rack with tongs). They turned out really good. I used my little cast iron skillet on top of the rack to scramble eggs, and blacken steaks (lots of coals needed for that).

The grill is very durable and as long as it is properly taken care of will provide many years of grilling pleasure! I really like it because the grill rack can be put in the sink for easy clean up and as long as it's properly seasoned, I don't have to worry about my food sticking to it.

I also have a 22" weber kettle grill that I use when I want to grill a lot of food or large items. If I don't, I set this one inside of it on the grate and use it instead. This is an excellent grill for a small household, and I recommend it over the other hibachi type grills. It's great for camping but keep in mind that since it's cast iron it takes a long time to cool down, so start grillin' early!

This is a great product!

I have four gas bar-b-ques. I hate them. I had one of these when I was young and I loved it, and I love this one too.
This is the right bar-b-que for one to four people. You only need a few briquettes. It is made of heavy cast iron and will last
a long time. Also it is small enough to take anywhere.

Good Old-fashioned Hibachi Grill

Love this grill. Just the perfect size for two people, though will hold more. Previously bought a Webber grill, but it was just too big and wasted too much charcoal. This hibachi is perfect...just like the one we had back in the 1970's. Heavy cast iron and should last many years with proper care!

Exactly as advertised

My hibachi came in excellent condition. My daughter put it together for me with no problems at all. Everything fit together just fine. I'm 'very' pleased with its quality and have been enjoying cooking on it many times since it's arrival. I treated the cast iron cooking grates just as you would a cast iron skillet and seasoned them with oil in my oven before putting on the wooden handles. I've had no problems with food sticking. The height adjustments are great. Just remember....it's cast iron. Don't leave it sitting outside in the morning dew or rain or it will rust. If that does happen, it will clean right up with steelwool then you can re-season it. All in all I'm very pleased! Well worth every cent.

Operate mini cast iron Hibachi Grill:
1. Spoon one to two ounces of Sterno Cooking Gel into inner fuel pot. One ounce will burn for 15 minutes. Do not use gasoline, lamp oil, lighter fluid or kerosene.
2. Place fuel pot into mini Hibachi holder. Place entire cast iron Hibachi onto the center of a wooden platter and light with a match stick. Be sure flame is out if adding more fuel. Carefully place grill cover on top.
3. If you wash cast iron grill cover, be sure to dry thoroughly to prevent rusting.
4. Arrange fresh marshmallows, graham crackers and Hershey's chocolates on the platter.
5. Roast marshmallows, assembly smores with chocolates and enjoy with friends.
6. Do not leave outdoors.... It will rust. Apply some Crisco Shortening to cast iron.

Perfect for Parties

We use these for fun family night, outdoor dinner night, and parties. Very happy with the quality of the product, and I ordered 4 of these. My boys just love having fun individually heating and searing veggies, meat strips, or even S'mores after dinner.

We love this. We use it for indoor smores and it works great. It is not very big but 2 - 3 people can roast at the same time. It is heavy and seems it will last a long time. We use fire gel which works great. I don't think any fuel cans would fit.

A handle was missing - the box was retaped - may be a return from a store, etc.

Overall, the item is chintzy - you have to assemble it.

The charcoal pan is painted black - this will burn off slowly.

I am going to assemble it, but this item, when shipping is included, is a total ripoff.

Great deal for under $8

I have owned several of these over the last decade and they are indeed chinsy, and they do require assembly. But for under $8.00, it is an excellent deal and here is why: It will produce great grilled food with that real charcoal taste that is so lacking from gas grills, and it will last several years and many hundreds of uses if you keep it from getting wet. It is made of rather thin steel that will eventually rust through to nothing, and water exposure will greatly accellerate this process. But again, what do you expect from under $8.00?

Fun grill

With sterno this grill works fine - I used a small can of sterno - emptied it into the grill and it burned for about 35 minutes. It would be nice if it would burn longer but we still had time to roast "teeny weenies" and make s'mores.

portable, yes. A piece of junk? Fur-shure

Do not buy this!!!!The pretty lettering is just a piece of paper pasted on. The pot is just dried clay, not even sure if it was fired.
The paper washed off and so did the white paint on the clay. It is about four inches square. Too small for anything, really. I tried to return it with a complaint and was told that it was never advertized as "fired". I do not know but the word "earthenware" means an item that was fired, to me. Was severly disappointed.

Cookout fun

I first encountered one of these at an upscale Japanese restaurant about 25 years ago. It was used to cook small chunks of raw marinated meat, raw onions, bell peppers and mushrooms right at the table. And this is exactly how I used this one.

To use, I started by holding a standard charcoal briquet over my gas stove's burner with tongs until the edges caught. Then I placed the lit starter coal in the hibachi and loosely piled about 6-8 coals on top of it. Don't overfill, as it will get too hot. They were ready in about 45 minutes. Use a plate or the like to pick up and move the hibachi as the decorative wooden stand provided is too small and the bbq gets quite warm. The hibachi can be used inside (with proper ventilation) but leaves an unpleasant smokey smell behind for hours. I'd suggest using it outside only.

Cut meat into thin strips about 2" long and marinate or rub to your taste. I used a bamboo skewer to drop 4 or 5 pieces of meat and a couple of veggie slices on the grill at a time. Cook mostly on one side until done and turn over for a minute to finish. The key is to keep the meat chunks thin. Too thick and the center will be raw. I'm going to try shrimp and salmon with pineapple slices next time. I also made a couple of dipping sauces. One mustard based (hot) and one horseradish.

The cooking surface is small (about 5" x 5") and thus not suitable for cooking for a crowd. My wife and I use it when we are too lazy to fire up the grill and have some leftover stew meat or chicken. A couple of them are great at a party for making pre-bbq appetizers with cocktails. Like a fondue but with meat. Kids love them but should be supervised.

Cleanup is easy. Let the coals burn out and dump the ashes in a safe place. The grate comes right off and can be scrubbed with soapy water and a pot scrubber. The grill body is not water safe and a dishwasher would destroy it. There is no reason to clean the body as food does not come into contact with it.

Although not Amazon Prime, shipping was free and my order arrived in 3 days. I bought 4. Two for us and the rest as gifts.
